18th century scientist G. C. Lichtenberg understood the importance of prior knowledge to reading: “A book is like a mirror: if an ass looks in, you can’t expect an apostle to look out.”

I came across this quotation in Alan Jacob's lively book The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction.

Lichtenberg understood the importance of prior knowledge to reading, a subject on which there is considerable scientific evidence. I've written about it before, and will again, I'm sure. (And if reading's not your thing, here's the video.)
